Our Reunion Is This Saturday Night, Sept. 13th!

First and foremost -- Everyone is welcome to attend our reunion, whether or not you signed up or rsvp'd in advance. If you already said you're coming, you're on the list (below). If you haven't yet said you're coming, and you do plan to attend, please rsvp to jordan88reunion @ gmail.com. (If your name is on the list, you have rsvp'd, even if you haven't yet registered.) But even if you don't rsvp, or if it's a last-minute decision, please still come.

For people who show up at the door, unannounced, we'll feed you if we can, and if we can't, you'll pay less. Every day now, I'm getting another 5-10 people signing up (including spouses). My food orders (both lunch and dinner) are going to have to be based on people I hear from by Tuesday evening.

Second, reunion payment details are still listed below.

Inviting teachers to lunch. I have done what I can to contact teachers and staff to invite them to lunch (or the evening, too, if they want). If you would really like a specific teacher to come, then please track that teacher down asap and let me know if I need to add to our lunch list accordingly. Several teachers have already signed up, though, and their names are on the list below.

Friday evening football game, Sep. 12. Totally informal. Come if you want. Starts at 7 p.m., versus Knightdale High School. I personally plan to attend, but I won't be there till btn. 8-9 (driving from Virginia).

Sat. Lunch. Lunch will be served from 12-2, in Jordan's cafeteria. You may arrive as early as 11:30. Mr. Webber, who is now principal, approved our use of the space, so I assume there will be enough parking. Toward the end of that time, Mr. Green, the physics teacher (still!) and Laura's dad, will give us a tour of the school. They've done some additions and upgrades in other places, too, not just the cafeteria.

Sat. after lunch. The new Hope Valley School, playground, esp. for the kids. Note: I have not made any arrangements with that school for this, although I have in the past just walked up with my kids to other elementary school playgrounds in the area (after school hours). I'm pretty sure my kids (ages 3, 6) will be coming along.

Sat. evening. Our event runs 6:30 p.m. - 1 a.m., at the Carolina Theatre in downtown Durham, 309 West Morgan Street. They have a big parking deck across the street.

Other event. In another space of the same building, using the same entrance as we are, will be some kind of children's show. They finish around 7 p.m. (starting at 6 p.m.). Don't be surprised when you see swarms of kids.

How to dress. There's no way I'm going to get you all to dress the same. Nonetheless, I will suggest that everyone try to dress either business casual, or semi-formal/cocktail. Every reunion, we get jeans and t-shirts, too, so whatever suits you.

Dinner/food. Again, we're doing heavy hors-d'oeuvres, with tables and chairs available for those who want. Food will be served at 7 p.m. This is not a good event for being fashionably late. At 8 p.m., if we have more people than food ordered, I will open the food (and price accordingly) to those who didn't rsvp in advance. Also at 8 p.m., I will release any remaining vegetarian herbivore finger sandwiches for omnivore consumption. (The grilled veggies, fruits & cheese, and baked brie are for everyone, as well as some meats.)

DJ/end hours. We have the place till 1 a.m. The DJ will play (I think I remember correctly) till 12:30.

Alcohol. Here's what I worked out with our caterer-bartenders. There was no cheaper way possible. Cash bar. Beers $3.50, wine $5. (We'll see how much they fill those glasses!) They couldn't provide every drink requested, but your requests helped me find some middle ground with them: Chardonnay white wine, Cabernet-Sauvignon red wine. Michelob Ultra, Budweiser, Newcastle, and Sam Adams. We will close the bar at midnight.

Hotel next door. I'm pretty sure the Marriot next-door to our reunion will have rooms available last-minute. Last I heard, they were $104/night + tax. If you need to crash, there's your place.

Below is a list of people who have confirmed they plan to attend. The list includes people whose registrations are not yet received. It does not include kids, and we'll have more than 30 of them. The list includes several teachers. If you are on this list and your plans have changed so that you can not attend, please respond immediately.

Several other people are still official maybes, and we keep hearing from new people indicating they will attend. That is, this list is getting longer by the day.

Time to Register for the Reunion!

Reunion Pricing and Registration • September 13, 2008

We have worked hard to strike a compromise between doing something very nice, and keeping our event reasonably priced. A local prize-winning caterer, Bon Vivant (hired for many Duke events), will provide heavy hors-d'oeuvres, including meats and vegetables. Carolina Theatre will provide ample tables.

For the food, renting the space, hiring a DJ and a bartender, and overhead like postage, the price is $45/person, with a twist. This price is cutting it close for breaking even. (Five years ago, I lost a substantial sum on our reunion.) If you are able, you are encouraged to register for $55/person, or more.

Saturday lunch, 12-2 p.m., Jordan High School cafeteria, Bullocks BBQ -- BBQ, fried chicken, three sides, tea, and lemonade. This is $12.50 per adult, $5 per child ages 12 and up, $3 per child ages 6-11, and free for children 5 and under.

Saturday night, 6:30 p.m.- 1 a.m., Carolina Theatre ballroom and balcony room. Music, dancing, and a cash bar after dinner.

Reunion lodging

We have a verbal block reservation at the Durham Marriott, right next to our reunion at the Carolina Theatre. (No driving home required!) Those rooms cost $119/night, plus about $15 tax, but you should request their best rate, which now appears to be $104 a night. They are under-booked for both nights, Sep. 12 and Sep. 13. If they give you any trouble, push them for the $104 rate, which other callers have received. Phone: 919-768-6000.

20th Reunion Schedule

Hi everyone! Here's the schedule for our upcoming reunion in September. Some of the details aren't worked out yet, so please check back here for more information.

Friday, September 12 - Jordan home football game (Time TBA)

Saturday, September 13 - Lunch for the whole family catered by Bullock's BBQ in Jordan's (much improved) cafeteria. After lunch, we'll take a tour of the school, including the fancy library where the courtyard used to be. We'll invite our former teachers and administrators to join us. If you have contact info for a favorite middle school or elementary teacher, please email it to us. After the tour, we'll hang out, with or without kids, at the new(ish) Hope Valley Elementary School and its playground.

Saturday night, the reunion takes place at the Carolina Theatre ballroom and balcony room. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., dinner starts at 7 p.m., and there will be music, dancing, and a cash bar after dinner. The party will last at least until 1 a.m.

Lodging: Right next to the Carolina Theatre, at the Marriot Civic Center, Jeff has reserved a block of rooms for both Friday and Saturday nights. The rate is $119 + $15.17 tax / night. We'll include the number here as soon as the details are finalized. Be sure to reserve your room soon after that to guarantee those rates.

September 13th!

That's the lucky day for our reunion, so mark your calendars and start making plans to get to Durham that weekend!

Make sure to read through our list of missing classmates and send us any information you might have for friends or acquaintances who are missing. We're hoping to round up as many of them as possible.

Also, please invite or nominate any friends of JHS '88 -- neighbors, those who moved away, graduates of '87 or '89 who were close to a lot of us, etc. Just let us know by emailing jordan88reunion [ at ] gmail [dot] com.

We don't have a lot of details of the reunion figured out yet, but we'll post everything here as we nail it down, so check back soon!
